YouTube now recommends up to 3840 × 2160 with a 640 px minimum width. 1280 × 720 remains the standard working size and is what most creators mean by "thumbnail size". The 2 MB ceiling applies to mobile uploads; desktop currently allows 50 MB.

Why this asset is awkward
Almost nobody sees a thumbnail at 1280 × 720. They see it at about 360 pixels wide in a home feed, 220 on a phone, and 168 in a search result. A thumbnail is really a 168-pixel image that happens to be stored at 1280 × 720, and that is the whole design problem.
This page crops any image to an exact 16:9 thumbnail and then renders it at all three real display widths at once, so you can see the moment your four-word headline stops being readable. The duration-badge overlay marks the corner YouTube covers with the timestamp. Everything runs in your browser; the image is never sent to a server.

What the overlays mean
Two overlays are drawn. The bottom-right box is roughly where YouTube stamps the duration pill and the resume bar, so avoid putting a face or a word there. The centre box is our own legibility guideline rather than a YouTube rule: content that touches the outer 10% of the frame tends to feel cramped once the thumbnail is scaled into a feed card with rounded corners.

Three things that go wrong

Read the search-result preview, not the big one
If the smallest preview on this page is unreadable, the thumbnail is unreadable. Fewer, larger words fix it faster than a different font.

Keep the bottom-right corner boring
The duration badge and the red watched-bar both live there. A face, a logo or the last word of a headline placed in that corner will be partly covered on every impression.

4K is allowed, 2 MB is still the mobile ceiling
YouTube now recommends up to 3840 × 2160, but the mobile upload limit is 2 MB. Exporting the 4K size as a quality-0.85 JPEG usually lands well under it; the byte counter tells you before you commit.
Questions people actually ask
What is the maximum file size for a YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube currently states 2 MB for video thumbnails uploaded on mobile and 50 MB on desktop, with 10 MB for podcast thumbnails on mobile. Exporting under 2 MB keeps the file valid everywhere, which is why this tool warns at 2 MB by default.
Can I upload a 1920 × 1080 thumbnail instead of 1280 × 720?
Yes. Anything 16:9 and at least 640 pixels wide is accepted, and YouTube now recommends up to 3840 × 2160. All three sizes are available in the export panel here. The extra resolution mainly helps on large screens; it does not change how the thumbnail is cropped.
Does resizing a thumbnail here affect my video?
No. This tool only produces an image file on your device. Nothing is uploaded to YouTube, and no account or sign-in is involved — you download the file and set it yourself in YouTube Studio.
Is this a click-through-rate predictor?
No, and be sceptical of tools that claim to be. This is a visual test: it shows your thumbnail at the three sizes viewers actually see so you can judge legibility yourself. It makes no prediction about performance.
