Discord server icon size and circle crop
The short answer
A Discord server icon should be a 512 × 512 square, at least 128 × 128, which Discord shows as a 48 px circle in the server list — checked 28 October 2026.
Source: Discord Support — creating a server · Last checked · CORROBORATED
Discord states a 128 × 128 minimum for server icons and suggests cropping in multiples of 128. It does not publish a recommended size or a byte ceiling, so 512 × 512 is used as a sharp working size corroborated from current public references, and no file limit is asserted.

Why this asset is awkward
The server icon is the most-seen image a Discord community owns. It sits in the server list of every member, beside invite links and on discovery cards, and almost everywhere it appears it is a 48-pixel circle. A square logo uploaded as-is loses its corners to that circle, and fine lettering that reads well at 512 pixels turns to noise at 48.
This editor draws the circular crop over your image while you position it, marks the corner where Discord puts the red mention badge, and previews the icon at its real 48-pixel size, both as the resting circle and as the rounded square it becomes when hovered or selected. Everything is cropped and exported in this browser tab; nothing is uploaded.

What the overlays mean
The dimmed area outside the circle is cut away in the server list. The small marker at the bottom-right is where Discord stacks the mention-count badge when a server has unread mentions; it is observed from the current interface, not a published measurement. Keep initials and symbols inside the circle and clear of that corner.
- Circular display crop: cropped away
- Discord shows server icons as circles in the server list, so the corners of your square are cut away there.
- Mention badge: covered
- Approximate position of the red mention-count badge Discord places over the bottom-right of a server icon when there are unread mentions. Observed layout, not a published measurement.
Three things that go wrong
- 01
Design for 48 pixels, not 512
Check the 48 px preview first. One bold mark or two letters survive at that size; a full wordmark or a detailed illustration does not.
- 02
Leave the corners to the background
The circle removes about a fifth of the square, starting at the corners, and hovering briefly reveals them as a rounded square. Fill the corners with background colour rather than content.
- 03
Animated icons are a separate job
Discord allows animated GIF server icons only on boosted servers. This tool exports still PNG and JPEG, so make the still version here and treat the animation as its own file.
Questions people actually ask
What size should a Discord server icon be?
Upload a square at 512 × 512 pixels. Discord’s stated minimum is 128 × 128 and it suggests cropping in multiples of 128, but the icon is shown on high-density screens and in several places, so a 512 source stays sharp everywhere. Discord does not publish a recommended size; 512 is the working figure current public references agree on.
Is a Discord server icon round or square?
You upload a square and Discord displays it as a circle in the server list. When you hover over a server, or while it is selected, the circle morphs into a rounded square, so the corners do appear briefly. Keep anything important inside the circle.
Can a Discord server icon be animated?
Yes, on boosted servers, using an animated GIF. Unboosted servers show a still image. This editor exports still images only, and it tells you if you load an animated file rather than silently flattening it.
Is the server icon the same as the server banner?
No. The icon is the small square shown as a circle in the server list. The banner is a separate 960 × 540 image at the top of the channel list, and it needs boosts to unlock. Each has its own tool here.
