An emote lives or dies at 28 pixels. That is the size it renders at in a chat line, and it is roughly the size of the full stop at the end of this sentence. Detail that looks charming at 112 pixels — a thin outline, a pupil, a strand of hair — collapses into a grey pixel at 28.

Three things that go wrong

Check both chat themes
The checkerboard toggle switches the preview between light and dark backgrounds. A dark outline that reads perfectly on light chat can disappear entirely on dark, and half your viewers use the other one.

One idea per emote
At 28 pixels you get roughly one recognisable shape and one strong colour. A character holding a sign holding a joke is three ideas and reads as none of them.

Flattening kills an emote
If your source is a JPEG, it has no transparency and will upload as a square block with a background. The transparency checker on this page tells you before you download whether your image actually has an alpha channel.
