YouTube profile picture size and circular crop
The short answer
A YouTube profile picture should be an 800 × 800 square that YouTube renders as a 98 × 98 circle, in PNG or JPEG at 4 MB or less — checked 31 July 2026.

YouTube renders the channel picture at 98 × 98 and asks for a square or round image. The 800 × 800 upload and 4 MB ceiling come from the branding upload dialog rather than a fetchable help page, so treat them as a safe working target rather than a quoted rule.

Runs on your device. Your image is decoded, cropped and encoded by this browser tab. It is never uploaded, and there is no image-processing service behind this page.
Why this asset is awkward
The picture you upload is a square; the picture anyone sees is a circle. Roughly 21% of your square is discarded by the circular mask, and the corners go first — which is why a logo that fits perfectly in a square arrives on YouTube with its edges shaved.
This editor draws the circle mask over your crop while you position it, then previews the result at channel-header, watch-page and 24-pixel comment sizes. If your face or mark is unrecognisable in the smallest preview, crop tighter before you export.
There is a second reason to upload larger than 98 × 98 even though that is the rendered size: YouTube reuses the same file across surfaces and display densities, and a small source is enlarged rather than sharpened. An 800 × 800 upload costs nothing and removes the problem permanently.

What the overlays mean
The dimmed area outside the circle is what YouTube throws away. There is no way to opt out of it, so treat the inscribed circle as the real canvas and use the corners only for background colour.
- Circular display cropcropped away
- YouTube stores a square but displays a circle. Anything in the corners of your square is cut off everywhere it appears.
Three things that go wrong
- 01
Crop to the head, not the person
At 24 pixels a half-body shot becomes a smudge. Fill roughly 70% of the circle with your face or your mark.
- 02
Give logos breathing room inside the circle
A square logo scaled to touch the circle edge looks clipped. Scale it to about 80% of the circle diameter and let the background carry the rest.
- 03
Avoid thin outlines
A 2-pixel border on an 800 × 800 export is invisible at 98 pixels and turns into a grey haze at 24. Use solid shapes and high contrast instead.
Questions people actually ask
What size is a YouTube profile picture in pixels?
Upload 800 × 800. YouTube renders the channel picture at 98 × 98 in most places and much smaller in comments, but uploading at 800 × 800 keeps it sharp on high-density displays.
Does YouTube crop profile pictures to a circle?
Yes. YouTube stores a square and masks it to a circle everywhere it appears — channel header, watch page, comments and search. Anything in the corners of the square is never shown.
Can I use a transparent PNG for a YouTube profile picture?
You can upload one, but the transparency is not useful: YouTube composites the avatar onto its own background, which is light or dark depending on the viewer’s theme. A logo that relies on transparency can vanish against one of them. Export with a solid background colour instead — the background control in the editor does exactly that.
Why is my profile picture blurry on the channel page?
Usually because the source was smaller than 800 × 800 and had to be upscaled. The editor flags this: if the upscale warning appears, no export setting will recover the detail, only a larger original will.
