Why this asset is awkward
Your Twitch avatar does most of its work at 30 pixels, in the followed-channels sidebar, competing with fifty others for a glance. That is the size that decides whether someone recognises you when you go live, and it is the size this editor previews at true scale.
Upload a square or any other shape — the editor crops to 1:1, masks the circle Twitch actually renders, and lets you nudge the focal point with the arrow keys until your face fills the frame. Nothing is uploaded.
The avatar is also the asset most often left as a default. A channel with custom emotes, a designed banner and a stock silhouette avatar reads as unfinished in exactly the place a new viewer looks first, so it is worth the two minutes.

At 30 pixels people recognise a colour and a silhouette. A recognisable palette does more for you in the sidebar than fine linework.

Match your avatar to your emotes
If your emote set has a mascot, use its face here. Consistency across avatar, emotes and badges is what makes a channel look established.

Do not put your name in the avatar
The sidebar already shows your name next to the picture, and at 30 pixels text is a grey smear. Use the space for a face or a mark.

Can a Twitch profile picture be animated?

Why does my Twitch avatar look cropped?
Because it is — into a circle. Any content in the corners of your square is discarded. The editor shows the mask while you position the image so there are no surprises after upload.
Is 256 × 256 too small for a modern display?
It is the size Twitch asks for, and it is fine because avatars are never displayed large. If you have a bigger source, keep it — you can always re-export. Uploading a much larger file does not increase the rendered quality.
