Instagram profile picture size and circle crop
The short answer
Instagram does not publish a profile picture size: upload a square of at least 320 × 320 pixels, which Instagram shows as a circle about 110 pixels across on a phone profile — checked 29 October 2026.

Instagram does not publish a profile photo size. It masks the photo to a circle, shown at about 110 px on a phone profile and about 32 px beside posts and comments. 320 × 320 is the size most widely reported as what Instagram keeps, so it is the default here; a 1080 × 1080 export is offered for a sharper source, and Instagram resizes larger uploads itself.

Why this asset is awkward
Instagram is unusually vague about profile photos. Its Help Center explains how to change one but gives no dimensions, so the figures that circulate come from what the app actually shows: a square of about 320 × 320, drawn as a circle roughly 110 pixels across at the top of a phone profile and about 32 pixels beside your posts and comments. Anything in the corners of the square is never seen.
This cropper draws that circle over your image while you position it and previews the result at both sizes, so you can tell whether a face or a logo still reads at 32 pixels. Export the 320 × 320 square for Instagram, a 1080 × 1080 copy if you want a sharper master, or a circle-masked PNG with transparent corners for use elsewhere. The image never leaves this browser tab.

What the overlays mean
The circle is the mask Instagram applies everywhere your photo appears, and the dimmed corners outside it are cut away. When you have an active Story, Instagram also draws a coloured ring around the outside of the circle. It does not cover the photo, but it crowds a tight crop, so leave a little space around a face.
- Circular display crop: cropped away
- Instagram masks the profile photo to a circle on the profile, beside posts, in comments and in the Stories tray. The corners of the square never appear anywhere.
Three things that go wrong
- 01
Fill the circle, not the square
Zoom until the subject fills the circle with a small margin. Detail in the corners is wasted, and a small face in a big square turns into a dot at 32 px.
- 02
Pick a plain, contrasting background
At comment size a busy background swallows the subject. A flat colour behind a face or logo survives every size Instagram uses.
- 03
Upload a square you cropped yourself
Upload a rectangle and Instagram makes you crop it on the phone. Exporting a square here means you choose the crop, at full quality, before Instagram sees it.
Questions people actually ask
What size should an Instagram profile picture be?
A square of at least 320 × 320 pixels. Instagram does not publish an official size, but 320 × 320 is the figure most widely reported as what it keeps, and it covers the roughly 110-pixel circle on a phone profile. Larger squares such as 1080 × 1080 are fine; Instagram resizes them.
Is an Instagram profile picture round or square?
You upload a square and Instagram shows it as a circle everywhere: on your profile, beside posts and comments, and in the Stories tray. The corners of the square never appear, so keep everything that matters inside the circle.
How big is an Instagram profile picture on screen?
About 110 pixels across at the top of a phone profile and about 32 pixels beside posts and comments. Those are screen sizes; high-density phones draw them with two or three times as many physical pixels, which is why a 320-pixel upload still looks sharp.
Why is my Instagram profile picture blurry?
Usually the source was small or already heavily compressed, so it had to be enlarged. Start from a sharp image at least 320 pixels square. The editor warns you when your crop has to be upscaled to fill the export size.
