YouTube now recommends up to 3840 × 2160 with a 640 px minimum width. 1280 × 720 remains the standard working size and is what most creators mean by "thumbnail size". The 2 MB ceiling applies to mobile uploads; desktop currently allows 50 MB.

Why this asset is awkward
The usual advice for an oversized thumbnail is “make it smaller”, which throws away the resolution you need. The better fix is to keep 1280 × 720 and spend fewer bytes per pixel: a quality-0.72 JPEG at full size beats a quality-0.95 JPEG at 640 × 360 every time.
Set a target — 2 MB, or anything lower — and this page runs a binary search over encoder quality until it finds the best setting that fits, reporting the exact resulting byte count. The search runs in your browser on your image; nothing is uploaded and no compression service is involved.

What the overlays mean
The overlays are the same as the thumbnail editor: the duration badge in the bottom-right, and a centre legibility box. Compression makes both matter more, because JPEG artefacts cluster around the hard edges of text.

Compress last, crop first
Get the composition right, then compress. Re-cropping a compressed image compounds the artefacts.

WebP buys you roughly a third
If JPEG cannot reach your target without visible blocking, WebP usually hits the same byte budget at noticeably higher quality. YouTube accepts WebP thumbnails.

Flat backgrounds compress; gradients do not
A soft gradient behind large text is the single most expensive thing in a thumbnail. Flattening it to a solid colour often halves the file.

Does compressing a thumbnail hurt quality?
