Pinterest pin size and 2:3 crop
The short answer
A standard Pinterest pin should be 1000 × 1500 pixels at a 2:3 ratio, as a PNG or JPEG under 20 MB for desktop uploads — checked 31 July 2026.

Pinterest states .PNG or .JPEG, a maximum of 20 MB for desktop uploads (32 MB in-app), and a recommended 2:3 ratio at 1000 × 1500. Taller ratios get cut off in the feed.

Why this asset is awkward
Pinterest is explicit that taller ratios than 2:3 get cut off in the feed. That single rule invalidates most of the long infographic pins people still make: the bottom half is never seen by anyone who does not tap through, which means the call to action at the bottom is never seen at all.
This page crops any source to a true 2:3 and previews it at roughly the width the home feed renders — about 160 pixels — which is the honest test of whether your headline works. A square 1:1 alternate is available for the cases where a pin doubles as a post elsewhere.

What the overlays mean
The inset box is our own guideline rather than a Pinterest rule. Pins are browsed in a narrow masonry column, so text near the canvas edge gets visually squeezed against the neighbouring column and clipped by the card’s corner radius.

- Social Toolshed guideline: pins are browsed at roughly 236 px wide in a feed column. Keep headline text inside the centre 88%.
Three things that go wrong
- 01
Headline in the top third
In a feed column, the top of a pin is what gets read. Anything below the halfway point competes with the pin underneath it.
- 02
Do not go taller than 2:3
Pinterest states that larger aspect ratios get cut off. A 1000 × 2100 pin is not more real estate, it is a 1000 × 1500 pin with a hidden bottom.
- 03
Big type or no type
At 160 pixels wide, text below roughly 60 pixels in the 1000-wide export is unreadable. Two or three large words beat a sentence.
Questions people actually ask
What is the ideal Pinterest pin size?
1000 × 1500 pixels, a 2:3 ratio. Pinterest publishes this as the recommended size and warns that larger aspect ratios get cut off in the feed.
What is the maximum file size for a Pinterest pin?
Pinterest states a maximum of 20 MB for desktop uploads and 32 MB for in-app uploads, in PNG or JPEG. That is generous — a 1000 × 1500 JPEG is typically well under 1 MB.
Can I use a square image as a pin?
Yes, and it will display fine, but it occupies less vertical space in the feed than a 2:3 pin, which usually means less attention. The square preset is included here for when you need one image to work on Pinterest and elsewhere.
Does pin size affect reach?
Pinterest’s own guidance is that 2:3 is the recommended ratio and taller pins get cut off, which is a display fact rather than a ranking claim. Anyone promising a specific reach increase from a pixel size is guessing — get the ratio right and judge the creative on its own merits.
